Meredith Steele is an Oakland-based artist and educator whose paintings are inspired by everyday life. She is drawn to the shapes, shifting light, shadows and colors she encounters throughout the Bay Area, Working in thin layers of acrylic, she allows small flashes of color to emerge through the surface, inviting viewers to look closely and discover details within familiar subjects. Her work is informed by the rich history of Bay Area painting and its distinctive attention to light and inventive color. Originally from North Carolina, Steele has lived in Oakland since 2009. She holds a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an MFA from Winthrop University. She brings more than 20 years of teaching experience to her practice.
