Canaletto's Perspective

The draw of breath, fantasy in amber,
brief afterglow, where so much is burnt—

umber, sienna, offerings. Past turrets
of cypress the olive leaves spark silver,

landscape-promise of personal redemption,
hinting Canaletto's sky might release

insight-proffering seraphs, messengers
from merrymaking deities, amalgam

of procession and plenary indulgence—
as if propitiation were possible.
